Details
In Midnapore district, West Bengal, madur grass is woven into table linen the way it has been for generations, harvested from river edges, dried on open ground, then interlaced with cotton thread on a handloom by artisans for whom this is not a side practice but a central one. This 4-seater blue runner is the smaller scale of a tradition that produces both mats and runners to cover tables that have fed families for years.
Madurkathi is the Bengali name for both the grass and the craft of weaving it, a tradition native to Midnapore district in West Bengal, where artisan communities harvest, process, and weave the material themselves without outsourcing any stage of production. This blue runner is woven on a handloom, the color coming from cotton thread worked against the natural off-white grass, the resulting textile flat, textured, and resistant to heat by its own material nature.
The blue is clean and unambiguous, it holds its tone at a table set with white, wood, or brass and requires no particular color scheme around it. At the 4-seater scale it lies across the center of a smaller table and gives the setting something to anchor itself to. The weave will soften with washing; the color will hold.
