Details
In Midnapore district, West Bengal, the madur grass that grows along river edges is harvested, dried, and woven into mat form on handlooms, a practice so embedded in the region that the craft is known simply by the grass's name: Madurkathi. These blue-and-off-white mats come from that tradition, the color introduced through cotton thread woven against the natural grass. Each mat is handmade on a loom, by hand, one interlace at a time.
Madur grass from Midnapore, West Bengal has been woven into handcrafted household textiles by local artisans for generations. These placemats interlace the dried grass with powder blue and off-white cotton thread on a handloom, producing a surface that is flat, slightly textural, and naturally resistant to heat. The craft is precise in its simplicity: no dye on the grass itself, the color coming entirely from the cotton weft.
Set them at each place on a dining table and the table changes character, quieter, more intentional. The weave pattern is visible at close range; from across the room the overall effect is soft and grounded. The mats air-dry flat and hold their shape.
