Madur Grass Woven Runner Off-White

The madurkathi weavers of Midnapore, West Bengal, have been making runners and mats from the local madur sedge grass for as long as the crop has grown along the region's river margins. The grass is dried, dyed or left natural, and then interlaced with cotton thread on simple ground looms. This off-white runner uses the grass in its most natural register, cream-toned, textured, honest.

Off-white in Indian textile has a specific meaning: it is the color of cotton before the bleach, before the optical brightener, before anyone decided it needed to be whiter. The madur grass in this runner carries a similar refusal to overcorrect, it is the color it is, which is the color of something that came from the ground and was made by hand. Care Instructions

• Machine wash cold, gentle cycle.
• Do not bleach. Line dry or tumble dry low.
• Iron on medium while slightly damp.
• Wash separately first two washes.
