Details
From Midnapore in rural West Bengal comes madur grass, a sedge that grows along the waterways of the Gangetic delta and has been woven by Bengali hands for centuries. These mats are made by interlacing dried madur with cotton thread in a tight flat weave that holds its shape meal after meal. The surface is cool to the touch, slightly rough, distinctly alive.
The weavers of Midnapore, West Bengal, have worked with madur grass since before the British arrived to name it a cottage industry. The grass is harvested, dried, and handwoven by hand on simple ground looms, a practice that requires no electricity, no chemical treatment, no factory floor. What it requires is patience and knowledge passed from mother to daughter across generations. These handcrafted blush pink and beige mats carry that inheritance at the table.
The weave is flat and dense, heat-resistant in the way that only natural fibers can be. Each artisanal mat sits quietly under a bowl of dal, under a glass of water, under whatever the table holds that evening. They are the kind of thing you notice more as they age, the color settling in, the grass becoming more itself.
