Details
Midnapore in rural West Bengal is the home of madurkathi, the mat-weaving tradition that takes the madur sedge grass from the paddy field margins and turns it into something for the home. Weavers there interlace dried madur with cotton thread on ground looms, producing a flat dense surface that is both heat-resistant and cool to the touch. The lemon yellow in these mats is dyed into the cotton thread, then woven in.
The madur grass of Midnapore grows near water and is harvested at the right moment, too early and it won't hold its shape; too late and it loses flexibility. The weavers who work it have been reading that moment for generations. What they produce is a handcrafted mat that asks very little of you and gives a great deal back: natural, flat, heat-resistant in the way that only plant fiber manages without plastic backing.
The lemon yellow here is the color of the mustard fields of Bengal in January, saturated and specific, not a yellow that could be any yellow. It brings that warmth to the table. Under terracotta cups, under a steel tiffin, under whatever the morning brings, these handmade mats settle in immediately and do not announce themselves after that first impression.
