Details

Two dabbas, both made in Moradabad's Pital Nagari quarter from pure brass, both hand-etched with floral designs traced by the same steel stylus that has passed through generations of metalworking families in this city. The etching on each is individual, traced freehand, never perfectly symmetrical, always clearly made by a person rather than a process.

A pair of pure brass kitchen dabbas, cast and hand-etched by the artisans of Moradabad, India's Pital Nagari, the Brass City of Uttar Pradesh. The floral designs are worked into the body of each jar with a steel stylus, the lines dense and deliberate, the result closer to silverwork than to stamping. Two sizes make the pair versatile on a counter.

Use them for tea and sugar, or cumin and coriander, or whatever the daily kitchen calls for twice. The brass keeps contents fresh and protects against the moisture that plastic collects. With use, the metal deepens, the interior of the lid first, then the body where hands touch most.

Care Instructions

  • Brass will develop a natural patina with use, this is not a defect, it is the object becoming yours.
  • Hand wash only with mild soap and lukewarm water. Never put in dishwasher.
  • Wipe dry immediately after washing. Do not leave wet.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners and steel wool, use a soft cloth only.
  • Polish periodically with a brass-cleaning powder or lemon and salt to restore lustre.

Materials + Care

Pure brass, sheesham, cotton — colours from a dye pot, not a swatch. Brass deepens with use; that is not a defect, it is the object becoming yours. Care notes for each material live in the Details above.
