Details

Cast in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, India's Pital Nagari, the Brass City, through a process of mould-making, metal melting, casting, hand-scraping, and final polishing. The wooden handle was fitted afterward. Pick up this strainer and the brass will be heavier than you expect. That is because it is real brass, cast solid, not stamped from sheet metal.

Moradabad has been working brass for centuries, the city earned the name Pital Nagari, the Brass City, from the density of its metalworking families and the quality of what they produce. This handmade tea strainer was made there through the full process: mould construction, metal melting, casting, hand-scraping to remove seam lines, and polishing to the final surface. The wooden handle is fitted to allow comfortable pouring over a cup.

The bowl below catches drips. The strainer sits balanced in your hand, not too light, not unwieldy. Brass deepens with use: the inner bowl will develop a warm patina over months of contact with tea and steam. This is not deterioration. This is the object becoming calibrated to your particular household.
