Details
In the Himalayan foothills of Nagaland, tribal women weave on backstrap looms, the loom is anchored to a tree or post, the tension held by the weaver's own body. The motifs on this handcrafted black-and-white piece belong to a specific tribe; each is a marker of identity as much as a design choice. The cloth has a density to it that only a body-tensioned loom can produce.
Nagaland's backstrap loom tradition, sometimes called the loin loom, is one of the oldest weaving systems in the world. The weaver controls tension through her own posture, creating a handmade cloth whose tightness of weave comes not from a machine but from muscle and attention. The monochrome black-and-white motifs here carry tribal identity: specific symbols belonging to specific communities in northeast India.
Set it against a neutral sofa, or let it anchor a pile of other textiles. The monochrome is not minimalism for its own sake, it is the visual language of a people who have always known what they want to say.
