Details
Puri, Odisha, the Jagannath temple town, has sustained Pattachitra, cloth painting, for centuries. Artists like Niranjan Moharana grind their own pigments, prepare the fabric with chalk and resin, and paint fine-line figures with brushes made from squirrel hair. This Tree of Life was made by his hand.
Pattachitra, literally 'cloth painting', is an art form from the temple town of Puri in Odisha, practiced by hereditary artists who prepare their own surfaces and pigments. This Tree of Life is painted on Tussar silk by Niranjan Moharana, a National Award-winning artist. The lines are fine and the palette is the characteristic earthy warmth of traditional Pattachitra: ochre, terracotta, black, white derived from conch shell.
The Tree of Life motif appears across traditions, this version is specifically Odishan, with the hierarchical arrangement of birds and figures that characterizes the Puri school. Frame it or hang it as-is. It does not need help.
