Details
The Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh has nearly a lakh women artisans whose sole livelihood is crochet lace, a craft introduced by outsiders and owned entirely by those who learned it. The quad pattern on this cover was worked hook by hook, the four-square repeat set by the artisan's hands and memory.
The crochet tradition of the Godavari district began in the 1800s when Irish missionaries taught local women hook-and-thread lace work. Over six generations, the community transformed it into something irreversibly their own, a craft cluster that now sustains nearly one lakh families through the production of exactly this kind of handmade textile. The quad pattern here is geometrically precise in the way that only handmade precision is: consistent but not identical, each four-square repeat made individually before being joined to the next.
White crochet on a white cushion insert creates texture without color, a studied choice for rooms that already have enough happening, and an easy anchor for rooms that do not yet.
