Details
From Midnapore, in rural West Bengal, artisans hand-weave madur grass from the region's wetlands into mats using techniques passed within families across generations. Rust-dyed cotton thread is woven through the natural grass, the warmth of the earth meeting the warmth of the colour.
Made from madur grass harvested in Midnapore's wetland belt, West Bengal, these mats weave rust-coloured cotton thread against the natural off-white of the grass. It is a combination with the feeling of autumn light on old brick, warm, direct, unambiguous about what it is.
Rust and off-white on a table have a grounding quality. They work under food that is colourful and under food that is plain. They make the table feel set without making it feel decorated. The madur grass gives the mat body and a texture that reminds you, each time you touch it, that it was made by hand.
