White Crochet Handmade Cotton Cushion Cover

In the Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, nearly a lakh women artisans support their families through crochet lace work, a craft introduced by Irish missionaries in the 1800s, transformed over 150 years into something distinctly, irreversibly Indian. The white lattice on this cover was made by their hands, hook by hook, loop by loop.

The crochet tradition of the Godavari region began as a colonial introduction and became something else entirely, a livelihood, a community, an artisanal art form passed from mother to daughter across six generations of women artisans. Each cover in this series is handcrafted: the cotton thread looped around a small steel hook, the pattern built stitch by stitch, without looms or machines. The white ground lets the texture speak, the small negative spaces in the weave catch light differently depending on the hour.

This cover sits on a sofa or a bed and makes the room feel less assembled and more inhabited. That is what handmade objects do: they carry a person's hours inside them, and that is legible, even if you cannot name exactly why.
